Lift Me Up

I had to say a special thank you to some friends who are helping at a time when so many things are going on in my life! You each have played a part in helping sort through some of the craziness of the past few weeks! There's long stories...longer stories...and life is filled with all sorts of adventures. You know, the ones you really don't want to be taking! A lot of things have surfaced and RE-surfaced lately...

For those of you who have listened and offered counsel: thank you. For those of you who don't have any clue what I'm talking about, thank you too. I know I have many people I can talk to. I'm surrounded by support and love from people that truly care and it means a lot.

There's more adventures ahead, but I'm overwhelmed with a feeling of victory. Victory because I know I have God and my friends on my side. I feel so lifted up. :)

And, I've been reflecting on some quotes I thought I would share!

Its all right to have butterflies in your stomach. Just get them to fly in formation. - Dr. Rob Gilbert

We shall never cease from exploration. At the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. - T.S. Eliot

Talents are best nurtured in solitude; but character is best formed in the stormy billows of the world. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices. - William James

Go to your bosom; knock there, and ask your heart what it doth know. -Shakespeare

Many other amazing thoughts flood my mind, but in this moment I will rest fully on Psalm 46:10.

Be still and know that I am God.

I'm so thankful that I can, and that everyone was put in my life for a season as this. THANK YOU again. :)

"On-on-ya"

What's for dinner tonight at the Gayler house? On-on-ya! Or, for those of you that pronounce it with an accent, Lasagna.

Can you believe I have never made this before? There's a first time for everything, and I decided to let the boys help me. Ian usually participates in some fashion with dinner, but this was definitely a dinner he (and Adler) made start to finish with little assistance.

Of course, I had to prepare the area appropriately. I laid out all the ingredients, and a "splash zone" mat.

The boys did a marvelous job. Adler (4) meticulously spread the ingredients evenly across the pan. Ian assisted him, by tossing everything in a pile very quickly. "All done!" he kept telling us. Oh, and he needed his hands washed about 40 times during the process. He is a very neat cook.

On the last layer, I asked them to spread the ingredients out with their spoons. They immediately dropped their spoons and had their hands in it before I could even blink. When I stopped laughing long enough to take a picture, they both looked up at me with the widest smiles. I love how cooking brings people together. :)

Ian was so excited to eat the On-on-ya he toiled over. It was wonderful to share dinner together with our friends.

We brought a serving of the delicious dish to Daddy, who has duty tonight. Ian chatted to me the whole trip about how he made it, and that he would tell Daddy all about it. When we arrived, he was totally preoccupied with other things, and I had to remind him to tell Daddy. I find it so amusing how passionate he is about whatever he's thinking about right THEN, and just as quickly can move on to something else!

At any rate, after questioning, he finally expounded upon what we used to make dinner. Sauce, cheese, salad (spinach), noodles, and ice cream (ricotta cheese?).

I loved our hands-on dinner and we'll be repeating this dish again soon. On-on-ya is delicious. :)

Good Guys and Bad Guys

Ian amused himself this evening before dinner by playing an entertaining game of "Good Guys and Bad Guys."

This game involved much running back and forth, and putting Zoe in jail (on the kitchen rug). It was hilarious to watch him run over and hug Zoe, and get her into a sitting position on the rug saying, "Zoe you bad girl. You go-ee cage." Of course, Zoe probably thought it was a more complex version of "Tag" but it amused me greatly to join their little game. Zoe became the maniacal villain who laughed from the jail cell. Of course, I guess the game should really be called, "Bad Guy, Bad Guy" because Ian said he was a Bad Guy too.

I think to myself, we'll be having a conversation later about Good Guys and Bad Guys...are we really understanding how this works?

At any rate, here's our dinner exchange:

"Ian, come to the table and eat!"

His eyebrows raised, "No, Bad Guy coming to eat dinner."

"Ok, Bad Guy, come eat dinner."

Ian smiles a satisfied grin and procedes to gobble up dinner. I asked him if he liked his dinner. He smugly replied, slowing his speech so I could get it, "No. Bad Guy. Bad Guy like dinner?"

"Oh, pardon me, I forgot to whom I'm speaking. Bad Guy, did you like your dinner?"

An enthusiastic nod yes and, "Bad Guy wants more."

"Well, if the Bad Guy wants more he needs to ask nicely."

Aghast, he informed me, "No, no, no, no, no, no...BAAAAAAD Guys can't want to say please. Baaaad Guys is bad."

Of course I could not keep myself from laughing at this, but his serious look brought me back to the moment. I'm fine with going along with the game, so I was already dishing up his second portion. How can you argue with a point like that? I set the plate down in front of him, and he made my whole evening.

"It's ok, Momma. I just a-tend [pretend] to be Bad Guy."

Maybe he gets it after all. My Good little Guy. :)

Old Sheldon Church

Ready for a history lesson AND an update? :)

I think Old Sheldon Church is my new favorite place in Beaufort! As much as I think these photos capture the beauty and presence of this place, I don't think they do it justice. Some things look better in pictures, but this church is just somewhere you need to go! It's so beautifully tucked in amongst the oaks, and is so quiet and peaceful it makes me want to write poetry!

From a recent news story in the local paper:

Formally known as the Prince William Parish Church, the church was primarily funded by British loyalist William Bull and bordered his Sheldon Plantation Settlement, Rowland said. The cornerstone was laid in 1751 and the first service held in 1757, Rowland said.
It became the first temple-form Greek revival building in the Western Hemisphere and signified the beginning of Greek revival architecture, he said. Many courthouses, libraries, college buildings and other structures were built in that style.
"It's ironic because the Bull family were huge loyalists ... yet the type of architecture that they brought to America became a symbol of American democracy," he said.
The British burned the church during the Revolutionary War. It was rebuilt from its remains in 1826 but met a similar fate in 1865, when Gen. William T. Sherman's troops set it on fire during the Civil War.
Today, the weathered yet formidable brick ruins look like "they're growing up out of the ground," said Mahaffey.

A few weeks ago, I did a photo shoot with a friend at the church. It was such a serene and thought-provoking place, I would have enjoyed just sitting there to think all day. To see the texture of the worn columns and walls, and to imagine Beaufort long ago was a mental journey well worth the little drive down the road! Can you imagine plantation owners in their finest hoop skirts, and ties?

We attended the yearly church service that is held the second Sunday after Easter. As we parked across the street and walked toward the ruins, we heard beautiful music playing and drawing us closer.

Zoe was immediately transfixed to the instruments, and Ian started swaying and clapping his hands (to baroque music...he rocks it!).

The altar was prepared (and I read that they even used pieces from the 1700s that were found in the church, but didn't see them!).

Everyone brought their own blankets or chairs to sit on during the service. We had a beach towel, and had a "seat" towards the front, closest to the choir and musicians. It was an Episcopal service, so there was a lot of standing up and sitting down and responsive readings. I admit, I cannot imagine repeating such things every Sunday, but on this occasion, reading and responding was a beautiful and meaningful expression of worship. It was wonderful to hear the voices lifted together in praise and thanksgiving!

Ian even held his program and sang together with us in the first few hymns. It was very touching the way he made every effort at solemnity in his singing. I think being directly in front of the choir had him in the perfect position for emulating piety, LOL. Zoe tried to eat my program.

I am very proud of the kids. It was quite a long service, and boring after the first few readings and hymns. By the time the pastor was ready to speak, both kids were ready to walk off and explore. But, they were amused by snacks and odd things coming out of the diaper bag. I'm especially impressed with Zoe, who NEVER allows us to hold her for longer than 10 minutes it seems.

I think my favorite part was when Ian started talking with his friend next to him. I shushed him and whispered very quietly, "Ian, you need to be quiet, no talking," and he responded with the hoarsest and loudest whisper possible, "I AM BEING QUIET." After this, I just touched my lips. What a hypocrite speaking to tell him not to talk, LOL!

The pastor touched on words I desperately needed to hear this morning. I'm thankful for always being right where I need to be.

The services ended with "Taps" echoing across the site.

A woman behind us complimented the children on being the best behaved there. At times, I felt we were a disturbance, but I KNOW they were definitely well behaved for their age. They sat/stood right next to me for over an hour! I feel so blessed that my children can enjoy such life experiences with me.

I'll treasure Old Sheldon Church not only for the history it represents for Beaufort and times of old, but for it's own impression on our lives. :)

Time Marches On...

It's been a crazy week...and more signs are passing by that little Zoe is growing up. How did she turn one so fast?

She's got two front teeth, the cutest little gap, and the most wonderful smile.
From 04.2010 - MISC

Knowing when people are coming and going, she will often offer a tentative wave hello or goodbye.

Not everything is fun and games. The older we get, the more we realize our power to make choices and have our own opinion. I admire Zoe for her ability to assert her independence. She even chooses her battles...most often, she tries again and again to get her way. Sometimes, she turns to something else quickly. But, we are starting to see a little more of her temper. :)
From 04.2010 - MISC

Really, her expressions are growing with her every day. I thought of a thousand captions for this, but will let you imagine your own.

New discovery...and an interesting new perspective on the Gayler house. She appears to do her best thinking this way, and enjoys walking around the house checking everything out upside down.

I admit, I'm a bag lady. And, my little lady is now enjoying the best invention ever...snack bags. It truly is exciting! Watch her face when I reach into the cupboard for one!

As time continues to march on in our busy world, I'm so glad I get to know Zoe more. Love that bundle of independence. :)

Slow-Motion

Most of the time it's a blur around here. If it's not running around doing one thing or another...it's children running around...

We had a funny moment last night I HAD to blog about (even though I'm needing to get back to cleaning) before I forget completely.

Ian was running around the kitchen doing his usual "Ian stuff" as Matt calls it. We call it "Ian stuff" because it is not always apparent what on earth he's doing. Some of his play has an audible and understandable dialogue, but he is only almost-three after all. The requirement is that it makes sense to him. Wait, I'm not sure that it really needs to make sense to him either.

Anyway...

So here he is running around the kitchen back and forth, doing "Ian stuff," spinning in circles, etc. He ran into one of the floor toys and fell over it, landing on the floor in a tangled mess of boy. Instead of crying, Ian goes back to the same path and re-enacts his fall in slow motion...complete with sound effects!

I wasn't actually there to witness this moment of hilarity, but Matt related it to me (complete with sound effects). I can't wait to see this with my own two eyes. I didn't know my son could move in slow-motion. :)

Splashing into Spring

This afternoon has marked yet another day of gorgeous weather here! I am so pleased that Spring is unfurling her beautiful green and yellow banner. Even though this means an uncomfortable dusting of pollen, the warmth of the sun makes it all so worth it!

It was just a quiet day with the three of us. We need more of these days! I did have to field some phone calls and sneak in some housework, but I am determined to enjoy even more of these precious moments with my babies.

I'm so glad I can play in a plastic puddle again. I did venture my feet in the water, but mostly played over the side. It's still a little cold, ok? As we splash further into Spring, I'll enjoy getting very wet! :)
